Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted Online

Applications for the 2024 John M. "Spike" Schmitt Memorial Scholarship are now being accepted online, with a submission deadline of May 1st. This scholarship, funded in part by community donations, is named in memory of Deputy John “Spike” Schmitt who died September 7, 1998, as a result of an on-duty vehicle crash. Here at the Washington County Deputy Sheriff's Association we feel it is our duty and privilege to help spread the word. The simple truth is this: 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This year alone over 250,000 women in our country will be diagnosed with the disease. It is the most common cancer among women worldwide.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK HONORED 135 FALLEN

In 2016, the profession of law enforcement, and our nation, lost 135 police officers in the line of duty. This national figure is the highest it has been since 2001, with nearly half of these brave men and women having been killed in ambush-style attacks; with the remaining being a result of various other incidents, including traffic-related accidents and suffering heart attacks on the job.

55th National Police Week

May 2017 marks the 55th year by which our nation will pay tribute to the men and women of our local, state and federal peace officers. National Police Week is an annual event, conceived from “Police Day”, which was created in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation, designating May 15 as a time in which our nation would pause, gather, and most of all, to remember, those brave men and women who gave their final breath for the sake of justice.

AMERICANTOWN'S HEROES: BAILEE RAISES MONEY FOR INJURED CHILDREN

Bailee Militello is a little girl with a big heart who donates the money she makes selling lemonade to help her neighbors. Her lemonade and helping service started in 2012 when she was eight years old. She wanted to do something for a local family whose house and belongings were destroyed by a fire, so she started selling lemonade and in a few short days was able to bring the family $1,000.

Watch this Harvard commencement speech by Jon Murad, a sergeant with the NYPD. He was better than Oprah – the keynote speaker at the Harvard graduation 2013. Jon is now assigned to NYPD Headquarters – 1 Police Plaza, NYC. Cops have to get out there and give similar speeches in every forum possible. Best possible PR for the profession.

2012.05.03 PRESS RELEASE

On today's date, our organization discovered that a group calling themselves “Wisconsin County Police Association” is soliciting donations by telephone in Washington County. A citizen approached a Washington County Deputy Sheriff informing him they had a donation ready for our association. The citizen believed they were donating to our organization. Our association does not solicit donations via telephone.
